Does anyone have the answer? I know some folk skin and cook the odd one but does anyone ever cut one one up to use for bait? Would Tope fancy dogfish chunks? Or would any self respecting Thresher or Porbeagle go for a couple under a float?
I just blindly chuck 'em back each time but surely they have a use ? !!

Days of old they used the skin as sandpaper.

Not sure if this helps?

Not even sure if the Pot fisherman use them for bait in their crab & lobster pots. Presumably too much ammonia?
Do the trawlers keep them at all or chuck 'em back?
Maybe used for fertiliser?

I was once approached by a school teacher who wanted some for dissection in his biology class. I gave him plenty! The kids had a brilliant time with them, apparently.

as said already defo used in pots along with any old sh*t they can get for free.

used them for conger bait and done ok with them. defo picks out the bigger conger. think to Scottish use them too for skate.

not bad to eat if you can be ar$ed to skin, soak and freeze them to get rid of the ammonia. after the hard work is done, I cut in to 1" lumps and bread them. taste like scampi.

That's interesting about using them for Conger bait...........never heard that before but makes sense as they grub around on the bottom like Conger. I suppose the bigger Conger have the stomach for them !
Thanks
