Hi all Whats the score at calshot, ive been told by the guard that you have to be a member of the clashot angling club to fish anywhere past the gate. When i asked him why his responce was that new forest own the land past the gate and what they say goes. Well not one for backing down i have taken it further and i have been informed that legally they cannot stop you from fish from the beach, only accessing it over their land. When asked what about if i walked along the beach, i was told they can do nothing about it. It seems that quite a few people have been paying to fish there when they need not. Not sure if anyone else has look at it closely but i would be interested to hear from you. Cheers John |

As you state, you have a custom immemorial to fish between mean HW and LW. The only prohibition to this right is a Ministerial Order or Statute usually preventing you from MOD land or Severals Fisheries. You have no right to access across private land. http://handbooks.btcv.org.uk/handbooks/content/section/3928 Ada |

Hi gremlin You are right in your facts but i can not find anything that says the calshot beach at the recreational area is private. Also it is worth stating that to trespass is a civil matter and not a criminal matter, therefore i dont think the police will be to bothered. What realy gets me going is the fact that they want to charge you approx. £45.00 per year to fish. Still i will continue to fish there and look forward to the first person telling me i cant.

All.
I am a member of Calshot. The actual membership is miniscule - I think only about £8 per year - But the parking there is about £5 per full day - so they sell a parking pass as part of the membership - plus you have to join the Calshot activity center club at about another £10. So, all in it;s only £50 for a year with free parking - right next to where you fish.. That makes it a great deal for a lot of elderly anglers that are members there. I have to say, that also you don't get too many muppets down there with their mackerel feathers, so some would say that on it's own makes the membership worth it!! |

Hi '2much' that's useful info for John and other anglers who use this venue. It does detract from right to fish from the foreshore. We've had something similar at Hayling where a local sailing club (HISC) has prevented vehicular access to the Chichester Harbour entrance. This bugs me no end since I've used the parking near the Lifeboat Station for more than 20 years. The road is clearly marked as adopted by the council and called Bracklesham Road even though it is now controlled by electronic gates. HISC has now claimed all the land outside their perimeter right up the the Lifeboat Station, effectively preventing any parking at this excellent low water mark. ![]() I'm hoping that the promised clauses in The Marine Bill will open more coastline like these to anglers and other leisure users. ![]() |

Calshot can be a good deep water mark and fishes well at low water too, but to be honest, I have had much better success on the other side of the water in the much shallower water near the river mouth.

Hi 2muchweed2fish I think you are missing the point. If the 100 or so members stop paying to be members, then it might force them to rethink. As said before i will continue to fish the venue when i want to and whilst i recept the fact that you have paid for a 'private venue' that will not stop me. Cheers John |
