Had a great day Saturday with a couple of mates down from London. Got a few decent plaice out east and then moved west hoping for a cod or codling. Nothing for an hour or so and then it picked up. We had a good mix of fish including mackerel, conger, Smoothhound, Ray, dogs, a decent bass on live mackerel and a cracking bull Huss. I was really pleased that they caught and had some nice plaice and mackerel to take back.

Sounds like a mixed week out there, great to hear all those who got something. I should have learnt by now that in the central Solent, rag is the bait to have supplemented by squid strips. Didn’t have chance to get any as a last minute decision to get boat launched and get out early morning. Should remember my own advice I give to people, rag is the staple for the Solent.
I had heard of codling off browndown hence where I went but just not happening.

Most interesting thing was watching browndown bouy lifted out of the water and pressure washed before being put back!

Tight lines all, ever get the feeling a night time session may be more fruitful?

Cuttle is THE bait for cod. Makes sense rag is attractive in the Solent, after all it is local.

We spent Saturday at Gilkicker followed by a move further up towards Lee, 6 rods out 1 dog and 1 pout were all we could muster.  Couldn't get hold hold of any rag so Maccy and squid were our staple baits.

Well done with that cod sounds like ragworm is the bait to use.
