iv heard of one caught around the back off the creek side only small....not sure though.
there must be cod out there used to catch them on my boat out by blackjack boy and with all these whiting around im sure they must be coming in and feeding on them but who knows chris..we will have to go down and give them a try one day with livebait rigs on.

Were you fishing by the lifeboat mooring. I saw a few rods on tripods as I went by in my boat. Didn't have a bite all day. . . .
Terry.

Hi,
No. We had a white hull cabin cruiser with a blue cover. Went by at about 22 Kn. I am sure it was you guys we saw. We were fishing large squid on 2 hook 6/0. We were after cod. Normally we still get doggies and pout. My water temp gauge was reading 4.5 degrees. I hope it was under reading. I tried a wreck just off Cowes (Algerian), Gurnard bay and then Calshot by the Dolphin thing. Not a flaming bite. Nice day though and better than being at work. Well done on the whiting. Nice catch of "edibles". Terry

lol ahhh right, mackrel baits seem to be taking all the whiting around calshot right now no other bait is getting close to it...but yellowtails+squid accounted for the bigger whiting.
i know cod are coming out off leap about 1mile off still mates having a few good trips out there,i didnt think you could anchor at the algerian due to wires etc?

Mackerel and or yellowtails it is. Thanks for the tip. Do you use mackerel from the supermarket or blast frozen bait from a tackle shop? As you might have guessed I've never used mackerel except in the Summer when I have caught them on the way out. Thats not quite true, I have tried freezing my own catch but they are a bit too soft.
Anchoring on the Algerian: I had nightmares anchoring anyway. I just replaced the anchor after stupidly losing the last one. I replaced it 'like for like' but it wasn't holding. I'll fix it soon. It just needs more chain. Terry |

tip i got of mate chris works very well with mackrel, when you catch them fillet them pinch of salt on the meat side then bag 3 or so in a bag, when home freeze and should come out firm and ready for the hook,as for blast frozen or fresh i buy bulk buys from baitsrus top company and order over £60 worth you dont pay for postage (7.99) and always in top "frozen" condition when it gets to you,not like most internet bait sites.stay away from tesco if you can, not as fresh as they make out :).
if i was on a boat i think size 1/0 on a rig somthing like a place drifting rig or a wishbone should get you plenty :)
